Oligarchy

I drafted this last week, but never got around to posting it. I figure that today, seeing as the whole mess has now been sorted, would be as good-a-day as any to talk about it.*

Of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, 3 have emerged with the balance of power. These three hold the key to any government that may be formed and, in turn, will be able to hold that government to ransom in order to get what they want.

Three blokes out of 150. That's not very democratic. Those three represent only a small number of voters, yet their electorates will be given some form of priority over the next 3 years.

My Electorate is one of 73 held by an ALP member. It also happens to be one of the safest. Pretty sure we won't be receiving anything special this coming term if the ALP is re-elected. My biggest concern is that these 3 independents are from the country, meaning they'll be inclined to want the NBN. Which is a shame because the entire proposal is a joke and should never have even been considered.

In all honesty, I think it would have probably been best for both Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott to allow the other to form government as the potential to damage / hinder anything a minority government will attempt to pass is so easy. This always manages to lower support of a leader / party, even though it shouldn't.

All the election proved is that both the major parties pretty much try to sell the same thing and have moved so far from their traditional ideologies that it's a farce. It also proved that minor parties (and independents) are afforded far too much power considering such a small proportion of the population voted for them.

I get most riled by the Greens. I strongly dislike the Greens. Apart from wanting to do good by the environment, most people would struggle to list any of their policies. They are a reckless, irresponsible and uninformed bunch and if people wanted to really vote for a party in the senate that could make a difference for the better, they'd vote for the Democrats.

Which greens voter are you?? Come on, tell me which one!

*The talk of three includes the Mad Katter, who obviously now won't be given special treatment in government

Also, I'd tell you who I voted for, but in my electorate it would have made no difference whatsoever on the outcome. So I don't believe it is even worth mentioning.
